An annual boiler service is one of those things that's easy to put off. The boiler seems fine. It's running. Hot water's coming out. Why pay £105 when nothing is wrong?
Here are the reasons — some financial, some safety-critical.
Your warranty depends on it
If your boiler is less than ten years old, there's a reasonable chance it's still within its manufacturer's warranty period. Most boiler warranties — including Worcester Bosch's industry-leading 10-year guarantee — are explicitly conditional on annual servicing by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
A boiler that hasn't been serviced annually may have its warranty voided. If it then breaks down and needs a major repair or replacement, you're paying the full cost instead of having it covered. A repair bill for a heat exchanger or pump can easily run to £500–£1,000.
The maths aren't complicated: one annual service at £105 per year vs. one major repair bill every few years without warranty protection.
It catches developing faults
Boilers rarely fail catastrophically without warning. Most breakdowns are preceded by gradually worsening efficiency, subtle changes in combustion, component wear that becomes visible under inspection before it causes a failure.
During a service, our Gas Safe engineer will check combustion efficiency, inspect the heat exchanger, check seals and gaskets, verify safety devices are operating correctly, and assess the condition of all accessible components. Small problems identified at this stage cost a fraction of what they cost to fix after a breakdown — and fix much faster, because there's no emergency scramble.
Safety: carbon monoxide
This is the one that can't be quantified financially. Carbon monoxide is produced when gas doesn't combust cleanly — and incomplete combustion can result from a number of boiler faults that develop over time. CO is colourless, odourless, and in sufficient concentrations, fatal.
Annual servicing includes a combustion analysis that checks whether your boiler is burning cleanly. This is not something you can check yourself and not something a CO detector alone can tell you — by the time a CO alarm sounds, levels are already elevated.
A serviced boiler is a safer boiler.
Energy efficiency
A poorly maintained boiler works harder to produce the same amount of heat. Scale and debris in the heat exchanger, incorrect combustion settings, and worn components all reduce efficiency. The Energy Saving Trust estimates that a poorly maintained boiler can use significantly more gas than a well-maintained equivalent.
At current gas prices, even a 5% efficiency improvement from a service pays back in reduced bills over the winter months.
When to book
Late summer to early autumn is the ideal time — before the heating season starts, so any issues found can be resolved before you need the system running daily. Availability is also better in summer than in November when everyone's boiler suddenly seems to need attention simultaneously.
